They are also one of the two remaining charter members of National League.
History of the Chicago Cubs
Established in 1876, The Chicago Cubs were originally named the Chicago White Stockings and was led and also owned by their president William A. Hulbert. They had become one of eight charter members of the National League and had played their first game in the history of the Chicago National League Ball Club on April 25th of that year; under the management of the legendary A.G. Spalding who had also doubled as the pitcher. The White Stockings had then gone on to win the inaugural National League championship and had become one of the sport's first dynasties, winning six of the first 11 titles.
In 1902, Frank Selee had become the team's new manager and noting the youth movement he had lead, a local newspaper had given the team the nickname "Cubs". The club had officially adopted the name in 1907 due to its popularity and is currently the longest running and most beloved alias' in all of sports.
The new millennium began as a tale of two seasons. In 2000, the team finished with a 65-97 record and established a club record when 51 players appeared in at least one game -- breaking the old mark of 49, set in 1966. And with 2,889,454 fans attending home games, the Cubs closed out the 2001 season with the second-highest home attendance figure in park history.
The season in 2008 was the 100th anniversary of the last Cubs' World Series championship, and for the first time since 1906-08 - the last instance the team had advanced to the playoffs in consecutive years - they'd won their second straight National League Central title with a league-leading 97 leads. Their catcher Geovany Soto had won National League Rookie of the Year as he'd belted 23 homer and drove in 86 in his first season behind the plate. He was also the first rookie catcher ever to start an All-Star game for the NL.
